2002 Fernhopper Tour
|
Always
looking for opportunities to show off the Cameron Tract, John Bliss
jumped on the chance to host the tour portion of the 70th Annual Fernhopper
Day. "Fernhoppers" are those esteemed and often notorious
individuals who have waded through enough blackberry brambles, poison
oak, and sword fern fronds in their educational endeavors at OSU to
emerge with a diploma and alumnus status from the College of Forestry.
The event draws an impressive crowd of alumni each year and provides
opportunities for alumni to meet and mingle with current students.
This
year's program focused on the endowed chairs and programs that are made
possible by the generous support of OSU alumni. Over 100 alumni stepped
aboard the yellow buses and headed out to the Cameron Tract. Once on
the property, Jeff McDonnell, Mark Harmon, Doug Maguire and John Bliss
related their research programs to different landscape scales, using
the Cameron Tract for reference. Their program integrated information
on hydrologic functions, carbon cycling, silvicultural prescriptions
and societal influences on the practice of forestry. With the sun breaking
from behind the clouds the Fernhoppers concluded their visit to the
Cameron Tract and departed for the Forestry Club Cabin where lunch,
logger sports and the chainsaw drawing awaited!
