Selective Harvest
Three Approaches to Developing
Uneven-aged Forest Structure on the
Elizabeth Starker Cameron Demonstration Forest, Sept. 2001
Individual Tree Selection
Free
Selection
Group Selection: The objective of this
prescription was to develop a gappy, uneven-aged stand. Groups of trees ranging
from 1/2 to 4 acres were cut to enlarge existing gaps and create new gaps
in the canopy. During the first entry, approximately 1/4 of the area was removed,
leaving approximately 150 ft square basal area/acre. Gaps have been planted
with mixed species. Douglas-fir were favored in larger gaps and western redcedar
was used in smaller gaps because of its greater shade tolerance.
