Three Approaches to Developing Uneven-aged Forest Structure on the Elizabeth Starker Cameron Demonstration Forest, Sept. 2001
The forest stands designated for uneven-agemanagement on the Cameron Tract are quite variable. Together they form a matrix that is ideal for testing the possibility of converting relatively even-aged stands into uneven-aged forests. The partial cut conducted during the summer of 2001, in conjunction with future harvests over the next decade will improve the timber production capability of the area by increasing the stocking of conifer seedlings and saplings, while maintaining a moderate supply of large saw timber. The stands under prescription will retain their forest cover, provide pleasant areas to walk through, as well as encourage diverse wildlife habitat while growing valuable timber. Special areas in the harvest units such as vegetation along primary riparian areas, unique patches of hardwoods, legacy trees and brush patches were left alone to encourage diversity on the property. To achieve the uneven aged structure envisioned, we marked and Crown B. Logging harvested approximately 40 acres according to three different selection methods:
