Faculty

The Graduate Certificate Program is taught by Oregon State University faculty with expertise in agroforestry, anthropology, ecology, economics, fisheries biology, forest engineering, forest restoration, invasive species, natural resource policy, non-wood forest products, philosophy, resource inventory and monitoring, silviculture, wildlife ecology, and wood science. Many courses also include guest faculty from other universities and countries.

Bishaw, Badege; Forest Science, OSU (SNR 532)
Assistant Professor: Specialty area interests include agroforestry, social forestry, silviculture, and international forestry research, education and extension work, internal and external to the U.S. Other interests include establishing riparian forest buffers on agricultural lands in the Oregon coast range plus red pine growth and yield in Minnesota.

Fletcher, Rick; Extension Forestry, OSU (SNR 531)
Professor, Forest Resources, Extension Forester, and Director, Sustainable Forestry Partnership: Specialty includes designing and implementing research and extended education programs which examine forest management practices and policy choices appropriate for private and public forests. Past efforts have emphasized sustainable silviculture systems, environmental performance indicators, green certification and marketing, agroforestry, and production of non-timber forest products.

Giannico, Guillermo; Fisheries and Wildlife, OSU (SNR 535)
Assistant Professor: Specialty includes salmonid behavior; fish distribution and habitat selection in freshwater and estuarine systems; salmonid habitat restoration; influence of riparian vegetation and land use activities on fish habitat; and integrated watershed management.

Kellogg, Loren; Forest Engineering, OSU (SNR 534)
Professor, OSU Department of Forest Engineering and Director, OSU International Studies Degree Program: Teaching and research specialty areas include harvesting young stands, mechanized harvesting, and alternative silviculture systems.

Kerkvliet, Joe; Economics, OSU (SNR 521)
Associate Professor: Professional specialties include applied microeconomics, resource and environmental economics, econometrics, and regulation. Past research has focused on measuring economic values, preferences, and responses to policy for environmental goods. New research includes evaluating the effectiveness of indicator-based forest biodiversity management systems.

Lach, Denise; Sociology, OSU (SNR 506, SNR 511, SNR 520)
Associate Professor, Sociology; Co-Director of the Center for Water and Environmental Sustainability. Trained as a sociologist, research interests focus on issues raised by individuals and organizations dealing with environmental problems including the use of scientific information in decision making, stakeholder and citizen involvement, and program evaluation.

Liegel, Leon; Forest Science, OSU (SNR 533)
Research Associate, Sustainable Forestry Partnership: Research interests include global sustainable resource management; resource inventory and monitoring; and integrating biological, socio-cultural, and managerial sciences to manage non-timber ecosystem products. He is bilingual in Spanish; conducted forestry and soils research in Puerto Rico and Latin America, 1970-85, on fast-growing exotics and native forest species; and teaches techniques to create poster displays for scientific and other audiences.

McComb, Brenda; Forest Science, OSU (SNR 530)
Professor, Department of Natural Resources Conservation, University of Massachusetts; Courtesy Professor, OSU Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in wildlife and forest ecology and conducting research collaboratively in an interdisciplinary natural resources program.

Perry, Dave; Forest Science, OSU (SNR 530)
Professor Emeritus, Ecosystem Studies. Research interests focus on the relationship between ecosystem structure and processes, with particular emphasis on the role of biodiversity in ecosystem stability, including genetic diversity within tree populations, factors influencing herbivory in forests, impacts of harvest and site preparation on soil nutrients and biota, the functional role of mycorrhizal fungi in forest ecosystems, restoration ecology, landscape process, the response of ecosystems to global climate change, and ecosystem management. He is author of the textbook Forest Ecosystems.

Pilz, Dave; Forest Science, OSU (SNR 533)
Faculty Research Assistant, OSU Department of Forest Science: Specialty interests include botanical, sustainability, and productivity issues of wild mushroom harvesting across the Pacific Northwest. Other interests include nontimber forest products and germination, growth, and culture of Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia) in urban and rural areas.

Radosevich, Steve; Forest Science, OSU (SNR 506, SNR 511 and Program Director)
Professor: Research interests include forest regeneration and restoration, population biology and ecology of invasive plant species, influence of humans on plant succession, and the ethics of natural resource development. Teaching has included graduate courses in Ecology of Invasive Plants, Plant Demographics and Growth Analysis, Sustainable Forestry, and Ethics for Natural Resources Workers.

Rosenberger, Randy; Forest Resources, OSU (SNR 521)
Assistant Professor. Research interests include non-market valuation, benefit transfer and meta-analysis, recreation economics, environmental economics, and resource economics.

Salwasser, Hal; College of Forestry, OSU (SNR 506, SNR 511)
Dean. Dr. Salwasser joined the College of Forestry in July 2000, following a distinguished career with the U.S. Forest Service. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in wildlife and natural resources conservation, policy, and ecosystem management.

Vogt, Tony; Philosophy and Sociology, OSU (SNR 522)
Associate Professor. Research interest is in the relationship between environmental sustainability and environmental justice. He is currently co-editing an anthology titled "Renewing the world: new metaphors of ecological restoration". In addition to teaching courses in both Sociology and Philosophy, Dr. Vogt is an associate of The Spring Creek Project for Ideas, Nature, and the Written Word.
