SNR 511: Sustainable Natural Resource Development (1 credit)

Timeframe: 4 two-hour sessions and portions of a three-day field trip.
Course Description
Using readings, class discussion, and a field trip to several local forests, we will introduce the Certificate Program sessions and pedagogical methods, familiarize students with basic working definitions of sustainability, and build capacity to work on both a group and individual projects. The assignments are designed to help students frame the questions they wish to pursue in their own individual project.
Desired Learning Outcomes
- Knowledge of multiple ways to frame sustainability, including creation of own working definition.
- Capacity to work effectively on an interdisciplinary research team.
- Ability to develop a case study research design.
Assignments
- Create working definition of sustainable forestry
- Identify faculty mentor and information sources for individual project, and draft sustainability questions to be pursued in case study.
- Develop case study outline.
